Dear Parent / Guardian,
 
My name is Mrs. Beckford and I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher for the 2010 – 2011 school year at Public School 213.  I would like to advise you of important information that would help you and your child get ready for an intense upcoming school year. The fourth grade has an intensive reading, writing, math, social studies and science curriculum.  
 
Your child’s current reading level is _________.  I have enclosed a suggested summer reading list for your child with two reading / writing tasks. These book reports are due on the first day of school in September.
 
If your child does not have a library card, please ensure that he / she gets one during the summer.  He / she will definitely need a library card for book reports and special projects in the fourth grade.  
 
During the current school year our school used an interactive reading program.  If your child has access to the internet, he / she should continue working on reading skills online at www.tickettoread.com. The same user id and password applies.
 
Please ensure that your child is ready for math by reviewing basic math operations AND the multiplication facts (times tables).
 
I have also included a supply list.  EVERYTHING on the list will be used. Please ensure your child is ready on the first day of school with ALL of the supplies.  Because of drastic budget cuts throughout the Department of Education, our school has extremely limited school supplies.  I have included copier paper on the list for copies that must be made throughout the school year.

Community Service at 213

Canned Food Drive – Students and parents are encouraged to donate canned goods support local shelters.  The drive has been underway for several weeks now.  Please donate anything you can.  Canned goods can be dropped of in room 106 during regular school hours.  The drive ends on December 18th.

Toy Drive – Please donate any new or barely used toys for those less fortunate.  All children deserve a fun-filled holiday.  Stop by room 106 and make your donation today!  The drive ends December 23rd.

Clothing Drive- Please help local families stay warm this winter by donating any unused clothing!  All clothing can be dropped off in room 106 asap.  This drive ends on January 30th.

Penny Harvest- This annual event encourages students and parents to gather those forgotten pennies and put them to good use.  Previous Penny Harvests were very successful.  Let’s make this one the best yet!

Technology Workshop For Parents! 12.3.09

This Thursday, December 3rd, there will be a technology workshop for parents in room 303.  This workshop will introduce parents to the P.S. 213 website.  Parents will have a chance to interact with the same instructional tools that students use in the lab.  The workshop aims to help parents maximize learning at home by familiarizing them with these useful resources.  The workshop begins promptly at 5:oo pm.  Hope to see you all there!

Rules for Online Safety

This fall,  students in grades K-5 learned how to stay safe of the internet.  Student accessed several informative videos at www.brainpop.com.  After passing the BrainPop interactive quiz, students then used Microsoft Word to create online safety posters.  Some of these posters are currently on display in the third floor hallway near the technology lab.  Stop by and see them when you get a chance!  Here are a few samples:

Supply List For Incoming 3rd Graders

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Below you will find a list of supplies your child will need in the third grade.  We are providing this list now to give you a chance to take advantage of the school supply sales that are held during the summer.  We hope this will be helpful to you.

The 3rd grade teachers

  • 5 hard covered notebooks (each labeled – literacy, math, science,socialstudies, and homework.
  • 2 Folders – Label one Classwork, label the other Homework/Notices
  • A pencil case (soft only)
  • A large box of tissues
  • At least 4 sharpened pencils brought in every day
  • A roll of paper towels
  • 1 pack of antibacterial wipes (used to clean desks to avoid colds)
  • There are NO spiral notebooks or looseleaf binders allowed

Please make sure that all materialshave your child’s first and last name on them, including the pencils.  You can wrap apiece of masking tape around the pencil and write your child’s name on the tape.

K sight words

Sight words are high frequency words that are found in the books the students read (for example:  to, it and I).  Three sight words are assigned each week.  The students need to read, spell and write them daily as part of their homework.  On Fridays, students write these words independently.  They need to know all the words on this list by the end of kindergarten.

To parents of students leaving Kindergarten

Dear Parents/Guardians,                                  2008-2009

The http://www.tickettoread.com usernames and passwords have been sent home.  Over the summer, you should use this website as much as possible.  Daily practice will reinforce skills acquired throughout this past school year.

We recommend continued practice of sight words.  The list of sight words that your child needs to be able to (easily) read are below.

Please make weekly visits to the library.  Reading each day will enable your child to maintain their current reading level and make their transition to first grade easier.

Summer Info for Incoming Kindergarten Students

Welcome Parents and Kindergarten Students,

We are looking forward to working with you and your child for the 2009-2010 school year.  The following is a list of skills that will help your child have an easier transition to formal learning in kindergarten.  Your child should be able to…

  • pack and unpack school bag
  • use the bathroom independently
  • open and close buttons and zippers
  • color within the lines
  • tie their shoelaces

Challenge work for the students to practice over the summer:

  • learn how to spell and write their first name
  • learn the lowercase letters of the alphabet

Here is the list of supplies your child will need to bring the first week of school.  All supplies should have your child’s name on them.

  • 4 hard cover notebooks,
  • 1 pack of pencils,
  • 1 box of Crayola crayons,
  • 4 hard plastic folders with pockets,
  • 2 large boxes of tissue,
  • 1 roll of paper towel,
  • 1 bottle of Elmer’s glue,
  • 5 glue sticks,
  • 1 pack of colored construction paper 9X12
  • 1 pack of Staples computer paper.
  • A complete change of clothing labeled your child’s name and a recent photograph of your child.
